Slayer: review by Doc Pierce

(Talking about the graphics and Doom comparison...)

I would have to say that they are much better than Doom. The pixels don't get very chunky when you stand near a wall and the monsters don't really pixelize at all (maybe a little)... There are two graphics modes "Best Speed" and "Best Graphics". I would have to say that BG is the most playable mode, very nice graphics and the controller responded the way I wanted it to. Also added a couple of lines on each edge of the screen. BS mode was just about the same quality graphics (couldn't really tell any diff), but seemed to respond "too quickly". Kinda felt a little uncontrollable like Wolf on the Jag. Kept overshooting with my aiming.

General impressions of the game, well, I showed it at our Amiga Users group meeting and everyone was overly impressed. Everyone who had played Doom stated that they can't wait for a Doom style game done on the 3do after seeing Slayer. Me personally, well I am in Nirvana. Being a rogue/hack addict for years now, I have the ultimate version. Graphics are much better than expected, music is good. The game is definitly different than Hack/Rogue, but you get the same basic addictive quality. In comparing it to Doom directly, everything is definitely more detailed. They only use one type of wall/door style per level though, and there aren't any gradual rises in the terrain or steps to descend to a different level or anything. There are pits with either liquid or stone floors to which you can see the bottom, you just can't jump down there and explore (but then it wouldn't be like Rogue at all, eh?)

All in all, it definitly shows promise in the 3D RPG arena. Tell ya what I would much rather see on the 3do instead of Doom though, Dark Forces (LucasArts Starwars doom style game). Maybe we should start a write in campaign for LucasArts to start doing 3do games? Lesse, Dark Forces, X Wing, Tie Fighter, Rebel Assault, Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle, Zombies ate my Neighbors. Yea, I would buy every one of those...
