Slayer: review by Jason Cross

Okay, first things first:

It's not an RPG. I wasn't expecting one, so I'm not disappointed, but don't YOU expect one, either. It's "Doom Too." It's an SSI AD&D ACTION 3D dungeon game. Look on the box, and at the magazine ad, and I defy you to tell me where it says or infers it's an RPG. It only says "the first AD&D game for the 3DO."

That being said, it's GREAT. As a Doom Too game, where there is no plot and the purpose is exploration and hack n' slash, it's VERY good. More satisfying than Doom to me, because in addition to the random dungeon generator producing more puzzles than Doom, and in addition to looking up/down (makes it feel MUCH more 3D), you actually DEVELOP as a character. It's more than Doom's "get a better weapon"...you gain levels and the things that goes with that, cast spells, find lots of items, etc.

Just don't expect an RPG, and therefore, a plot. It isn't SUPPOSED to be one, and there's isn't one.

It has it's faults, but those are mostly minor. LOTS of strengths, and I can honestly see playing through SEVERAL different dungeons (nothing worse than a game with replay features like a 4-billion dungeon generator that you'll never use becuase you won't want to replay it.

Oh, and BTW, I've got a 10th level ranger on level 12 of the Dungeon "beavis", so I've played it a lot. And not a single level has repeated any of the wall, floor, or ceiling textures.
