Orbix Programming Guide

1.1 Overview

Orbix is a powerful environment for building and integrating applications. One of its important features is that the components of these applications can run on different nodes in a distributed system. Orbix substantially reduces the cost of developing distributed applications and the cost of integrating existing components. It allows a system to be constructed as a set of interacting objects, each with a well-defined interface, and it allows these objects to communicate easily with each other, without concern for details such as:

The hosts that these objects run on.
The operating system that these hosts run.
The programming language that the objects are implemented in.

Orbix is a full implementation of the Object Management Group's (OMG's) Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) architecture. Orbix is compliant with the CORBA 2.0 standard, and it has been extended with a number of added value facilities.
